Ledger — Friendly Setup Guide

A clear, step-by-step walkthrough to get your Ledger hardware wallet and Ledger Live ready — secure by design, easy by example.

Why this guide?

Setting up a hardware wallet can feel intimidating the first time. This guide rewrites the usual technical instructions into a calm, human-first walkthrough with safety tips, testing steps, and quick troubleshooting. It complements the official resources and support materials from Ledger.

Step 1 — Unbox & inspect

Only use a Ledger device you bought from an authorized reseller or directly from ledger.com. Before powering on, check that the packaging seals look intact and that there are no extra stickers that suggest tampering.

  • Confirm the model (Nano X, Nano S Plus, Flex, etc.).
  • Keep the original box until setup is complete.

Step 2 — Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official companion app used to manage accounts, install coin apps on your device, and send/receive crypto. Only download Ledger Live from Ledger’s official site to avoid fake installers. After downloading, follow the on-screen installer for your OS (Windows / macOS / Linux) or install the mobile app from the official app store.

Ledger Live supports connecting your hardware wallet via USB and — for Bluetooth-enabled models — via pairing. The app also helps install the cryptocurrency apps your device needs.

Step 3 — Initialize the device

Power on the device then choose Create a new wallet (unless you're restoring an existing wallet). Ledger devices ask you to set a PIN — choose a PIN you can remember but that’s not easily guessable. The device will then generate a recovery phrase (usually 24 words).

Do not share these words with anyone. Ledger and legitimate services will never ask you for your recovery phrase. Never enter it into a website or app.

Step 4 — Secure your recovery phrase

Write your 24-word recovery phrase down on the supplied card or a dedicated metal backup. Store that backup somewhere safe and offline (e.g., a locked safe). Consider a fireproof/waterproof metal backup for long-term resilience.

Physically verify the words when the device prompts you to confirm — this ensures the phrase was recorded correctly.

Step 5 — Pair with Ledger Live & install apps

Open Ledger Live, choose Get started, select your device model, and follow the app’s instructions to pair and verify your device. Once connected, open the Manager in Ledger Live and install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you plan to use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Each app uses space on the device, so install only what you need.

Ledger Live will also help you add accounts; after adding an account, your device displays addresses to confirm before receiving funds.

Step 6 — Test with a small amount

Before moving large amounts, send a small test deposit (e.g., equivalent to a few USD) to the address generated by your Ledger account and confirm it arrives. This validates your setup end-to-end.

Safety checklist

Never type your recovery phrase into a computer or phone.
Only download Ledger Live from official sources and verify URLs.
Keep multiple physical backups of your recovery phrase in different secure locations.
Update device firmware only via Ledger Live and only when verified within the app.

Troubleshooting & tips

  • Device not recognized: try a different USB port, cable, or restart Ledger Live.
  • Unexpected prompt to enter 24 words in Ledger Live: this is a scam — close the app and contact support.
  • Lost recovery phrase: if you lose it, funds can be permanently lost. Consider Ledger Recover or a redundant backup strategy (research available services carefully).
